I have been very lucky, in many ways…but today I’m thinking about fathers…my own Howard Decker…(here we were in 1946)

We started Sunday at the beach…

but quickly jumped in the car, and headed home to get ready for Harry’s 84th birthday party.  LUCKILY I can sew in the car (…and no, I wasn’t driving…) I’m still working on the spring quilt…trying to finish before summer gets here!

We arrived home and I rushed off to a uke jam, while R fixed asparagus to take up to Harry’s party (oh…and we got rear-ended on the way home…)…we then jumped back into the only-slightly-damaged car with our offering in the “catering wrap” (hi Randy…)

and headed north.  After hugging and eating there was singing to the birthday guy…

and a tour of the new studio finds…Mardy recently found some crates in the garage that she thought were empty, but in fact they were full of these lovely wood sculptures Harry made in the 1970′s…

Harry is deeply into Alzheimer’s now, but the reassuring thing to me is that although he can’t remember us (though he doesn’t mind a hug), he is STILL making and arranging things…things he finds around or outside…and these are poignant and beautiful.Alzheimer's 1

I published this on my birthday in 2009, and every year since, but I still think it tells the first part of my story, so let’s go again…

Today is my birthday and I’ve attained a certain age.  I have plans, things to do, places to go.  But today I’m looking back.

For a few years after “the war,” I was an only child.  We lived in an apartment in Chicago where I played.

I REALLY wanted to be a “cowgirl.”  I dreamed of the far west.  I idolized Hopalong Cassidy.

While I was running around the suburban streets pretending to be this and that, my parents were building a new house and having a new baby (or three…).

I noticed immediately that the driveway made a PERFECT stage:

Time passed and many new houses were built filling up the street.  New brothers arrived, new cars.

Eventually they all moved into a bigger  house, but by then I was gone, starting a new life.  I moved to the far west to be a cowgirl.

Here’s to another year of fun, out on the ranch…!

A museum weekend…

It was a museum weekend for our house…I’m sure you’ve seen the new banner installed on the west side of the Hallie Ford Museum of Art…

Sunday back to the museum for a look at the Manson Kennedy film of 1976 showing Manuel actually making a print, plus commentary from George Johanson (friend and colleague of Manuel’s…fellow artist) about Manuel’s techniques and process…

Hey readers…here’s a recent perfect Valentine’s coffee…wish I was sitting across from you sipping the beautiful brew…(I raise my cup)…

…but instead I’m doing stuff like this:  using Borax and a “color remover thingie” (Mary’s technical term) to get out the red bleed on the recovery quilt, registering my lost baby quilt (thanks to Bill Volkening…) on a lost quilt website , and picking up a few things from the framer…

the house (“House on the Edge of Time”) and the fish (“Settler’s Child”) are going down to Mary Lou Zeek Gallery while “Tron” is ready for an April show at the Corvallis Art Center.  Oh…and then there are the songs for my honey I’m practicing on the uke (shhhh)…on we go…Happy Valentine’s Day!

We’re tidying up for New Year’s Eve, and to do my part (not even close…) I took on the dusting of the rooms I can get into in the wheelchair.  Wheelchair dusting, it turns out is kind of fun…a different vantage point and a way to appreciate things anew.

I started in the bedroom dusting the little white majolica plate I got in Tennessee this past spring…

Born in Tennessee, spending his first year in Brooklyn, growing up in Salamanca, NY, and then Wallace, ID…Roger was on the move early.

The oldest of six children, he had at least a couple of years on his own before the others arrived…

Maybe that’s enough of the story except to say he is a father, an art historian, a beach lover, a biographer, a curator, a caretaker, a lover, a friend.  HAPPY BIRTHDAY DEAR!!!
