So much creative stuff to do, so little time…learning “brushes” on the iPad,

sent off the little quilt for Baby Evelyn using left-over pieces of binding from the “Dwelling” project…

and she seems to like it…(awww..so cute!)

Today I have the Value-Village-sheet quilt on the design wall trying to decide if the zig-zags (I seem to be in a zig-zag mood…?) should be random or alternating…I think alternating…

and I was trying to finish the red and white “homage” (to last year’s red/white show at the NYC Armory) by Valentine’s Day…well, I MIGHT make it…today I prepared the binding to spur me on…

tomorrow back to the studio for some collage/transfer prints in process…

By Friday afternoon the stack is 800 blankets tall…and Angela said they are aiming for 988 and finishing by the end of the work day today!  The scaffolds are now in use to reach the top of the pile, and everyone is working in stocking feet…take a look:


Maybe a little bit a fatigue is setting in??

Meanwhile, over at “Engine” things are also going pretty well, as curator Rebecca Dobkins steps back to observe…

I dropped by the Hallie Ford Museum at the end of the afternoon Thursday to check on progress and they have really been working…as I arrived the team (which included Museum Director John Olbrantz) was in their socks ready to carry and attach the cladding for “Engine”…

and here’s the interior of the lower “entrance” section

meanwhile in the large center gallery “Dwelling” is really taking shape…

It turns out that after each couple of blankets it is necessary to pound on the stack to tamp it down and eliminate the tendancy to “dome”…

By the time I left they had stacked over 400 blankets…ALMOST to the half-way mark….

Looking GOOD!

Marie Watt’s show “Lodge” is starting to take shape over at the Hallie Ford Museum of Art today…I dropped by to check on the piece “Dwelling” that a bunch of us worked on this month.  I thought you might like to see it coming together…

Today there were stacks of blankets as yet unwrapped,

and they were just beginning to lay out the blankets for the piece “Dwelling”…

the big white square is the base on which the blankets will be stacked…

another piece in the show is “Engine” and that is taking shape too…

which will look like this when it’s all done

Here is a group of intrepid women…

L to R: Sharon Rose, Irene Mylan, Martha Curry, Cindy Pentony, Maya Close and Melinda Woodward.  (Not pictured were Sara Swanborn, Irene Longaker, Cynthia Wilcox, Bonnie Schulte, and Penny Unverzagt.)

These women helped sew and deliver 164 blankets (in three days!!) to the Hallie Ford Museum… with new binding attached… in aid of MARIE WATT’S piece “Dwelling” which will be featured in the upcoming show opening at the museum February 4, 2012.

The show will travel from the Hallie Ford Museum of Art to the Tacoma Art Museum, and then finally, the blankets we worked on this week will be distributed to homeless people and others in need in this community.  SPECIAL thanks to Greenbaum’s Quilted Forest and the fabulous staff there who made us welcome this week and made the process easy.  What an adventure!!!

We were back at it today…our intrepid little band of volunteers… (Irene on the left, Cyndy in the center, Sharon on the right, Martha stepped out for a phone call…Melinda was pinning out front)…trying to add more blankets to Marie Watt’s stash for the piece “Dwelling” to be in her upcoming show…

Interesting facts we learned today…wool is naturally fire retardant and doesn’t need to be treated (hence wool upholstery in airplanes, etc…)  the blankets we are working on are 80% wool, 20% man-made, which a nice lady who raises sheep stopped by and told us is a pretty high wool-to-synthetic ratio.  When all the blankets are stacked

the weight load will probably be upward of 3000 pounds…no surprise to some of us who manhandled quite a few blankets today…

Given our small but focused crew we felt like we did pretty well…

4 boxes delivered back to the museum…

and tomorrow we think will be our last day working at Greenbaum’s Quilted Forest, and we’re concentrating on red…we start at 9:30…come on down…

Artist Marie Watt will be featured in a mid-career retrospective show at the Hallie Ford Museum of Art, opening February 4, 2012.  As she is not able to come out west for the installation process, I volunteered, with Sharon Rose, to help get colorful bindings sewn on some 150 blankets for one of the pieces in the show, “Dwelling.”  It’s a stack for some 800-1000 blankets:

“story” blankets, plain blankets AND…blankets with bindings…In this photo Marie is in the middle…in front of the stack…

Greenbaum’s Quilted Forest has kindly loaned us their back room and 6 sewing machines for this project, and today was day one.  We delivered boxes of blankets Friday

and started in this morning

a hearty band of volunteers sewing…

Elan provided entertainment…

and by day’s end we had about 50 blankets completed.  We’ll pin and sew this week until we’re done…come on down and help out…make the stack grow!!  240 Commercial ST NE…10 a.m. til 4:00 p.m.

My curatorial career is coming to it’s apex this week while both shows I have recently curated are on view (“Lord and Schryver” at the Hallie Ford Museum…closing September 18th… and “Bits and Pieces” at Salem Art Association’s AN Bush Gallery, up until mid October).  Roger suggested this morning that there are certain similarities between the things that interest my eye so here goes…just some images…but if you’re out and about this week, go take a look:

I was thinking about Marie Watt today, and the fun I had in the fall of 2009 working with people in the Willamette community to help put together a piece that would eventually hang in Ford Hall on campus (she set it up like a “quilting bee” and students, administrators, and “others”…like me…came)

that’s Marie on the far right…

and I suddenly realized I had never gone to see the two big pieces in place in the building SOOO…after a coffee (not a pretty coffee alas)…we stopped by Ford Hall to check them out:

Marie’s in NYC for a couple of years…hard at work on a couple of big commissioned pieces…better go check them out right here on State Street…
