Today the darkest, shortest day–the longest night. Here is a look out our front door at 9:30 a.m.–living up to the depths of winter here in Oregon: As I begin to look forward to the increasing light (starting tomorrow!)I just turned all the Christmas lights on for cheer. I think it’s working.

…And Speaking of Local…
Here was a great idea. Kay has too much stuff and wanted to see her friends, so she put out tables of stuff, got together some goodies, and made some tea. A bunch of us converged and everybody went away with something (meanwhile, when Kay saw other people grab she began thinking hmmmm…..I want that […]
Think Local…Shop Local
Okay friends–the last two years I’ve posted about shopping local, following a local elf in Salem stores. This year, more than other years, our wonderful local merchants need your “custom.” I’m doing creative re-gifting this year so I’m not even shopping, but just want to remind you of The Arbor, Ma Valise, Ranch Records, Mary […]
Elves on the move…
Okay now we’re REALLY getting into the spirit of Christmas. Today we went back to Bush House to check on the decorating handiwork of last week and it was looking lovely. Today’s open house was crowded and fun with music and even Santa Claus (though I wonder what Mr. Bush and daughter Sally would have […]
Trying for the Magic…
When I was a child Christmas time was magical to me. Stuff happened, cookies were made, trees were brought in, presents were awaiting. Everything about Christmas and the days leading up to it seemed magical and fun and…sort of unfathomable from my child’s eye view. I don’t feel that way anymore, though I remember as […]
Christmas Spirit…
Today I really got in the seasonal mood by going as a volunteer to Bush House Museum, Salem’s lovely Victorian house museum. The Christmas open house there is the 13th so the elves arrived today to decorate. It always lifts my spirit to muck about in an historic house (other than our own) this time […]
The Day Itself…
Here’s a vacation blog day…no art today…only family. Sometimes I have to post stuff just my family wants to see since they are my most loyal readers!! We had a great Thanksgiving and much laughing and carrying on and eating good food. (There is nothing like a family that can cook!!) Highlights besides food included […]
Getting Ready II
So yesterday was busy with preparations. We made the cottage studio into a B & B Zach came and made some bread with this loaf looking like a squashed legionnaire face and while Zach and I chopped up about 300 vegetables, Roger put on the tablecloth and rounded up the chairs. This morning Zach was […]
Getting Ready…
Thanksgiving might be my favorite holiday. No gifts (hence no shopping), minimal decorating, three basic elements: food, family, friends. Today I began to make the lists, think of the “sides” we’ll eat and enjoy, and polish the silver. It wasn’t a pretty sight: And as I stood at the sink, with my hands in the […]
PNCA at 100
Last night was the opening of a really beautiful new show at the Portland Art Museum. Filling the big main floor galleries is a blockbuster collection of the work of the many talented teachers over the years from the Pacific NW College of Art–formerly the Museum School. It gives these artists their due in a […]
