Last week we visited Portland painter Harry Widman and his wife Mardy in Harry’s studio. Roger will be writing about Harry’s work and curating a retrospective at the Hallie Ford Museum, which will open in January of 2009. Harry got out a lot of work for Roger to look at and the day stretched from 10:00 a.m. to 5:30, with time out for a DELICIOUS lunch made by Mardy. I prowled around taking little photos of the delightful look of the studio. Here was our day:
Roger and Harry outside the studio.
Studio stuff plus these nice wood pieces.
An early painting.
Unrolling some of the big unstrecthed pieces was work, in a fun way.
This one looked good even covered in plastic!
Lunch and the garden

wonderful- it will be a great show
I just need to say that I am Mardy’s cousin, Lori and I have just returned from visiting Mardy and Harry in Portland. We stayed in the house that is attached to the studio. We had a great time with both Harry and Mardy, we enjoyed their company, their food from their gardens and all the artwork around us. Harry is a true inspiration, and a wonderful man, and not to mention a very inspired artist………….
Hi Lori–thanks for the comment. I agree on all scores. And the remarkable thing of Harry and Mardy letting Roger into their lives has been fascinating. I hope you can get to Harry’s show at the Hallie Ford Museum of Art next winter/spring…and the book will be wonderful. All artists want the work to tell the story, and Harry’s work has a wonderful story to tell.
