Urban Renewal has found Cutler City, and I jumped into the process last weekend. Skeptical, worried about design professionals imposing their will on a funny little place, I went along to some meetings. What I found was a nuanced and creative city staff (Lincoln City), planners and designers from around the nation and Europe, and us–a varied bunch of residents who were hoping for the best. After 4 hours of small groups discussing ideas, we each presented our results to the larger group. The ideas were creative, respectful to our “sense of place” and made at least one participant (me) feel hopeful about the future. I await with interest the finished plan as presented to the city. Take a look at a few historic images and little bit of the process:
The old historic dock at 66th–and the dock in the 1960’s as it began to fall apart, and what is left of the dock today (and check all the building on Salishan Spit!!).
HWY 101 (then called “the Roosevelt Hwy” looking south, and the arch into Cutler City.
The Crab Pot in the late 1930’s–still selling crab today!

Sounds like a productive and fun session. I see in one of your photos that the notion of reconstructing the Cutler City Arch (the gent in suspenders is holding an historic picture of the arch) is on the table. Very cool!
Very contentious though–some residents want absolutely nothing at all on the highway that calls attention to Cutler and how cool it is.
