Seattle Quilts

Last weekend Cynthia and I went to Seattle to see the Pacific Northwest Quiltfest put on by the Association of Pacific Northwest Quilters at the convention center. There were hundreds of entries in a variety of categories but as is often the case for me, the vintage quilts were the stars. These were part of one collector’s accumulation and included several “charm” quilts–quilts with small squares and no two pieces of fabric the same. The fabrics were the highlight:

The excitement of the day was discovering that LeeAnn’s friend Sally (alias Dorothy LeBoeuf) had won a ribbon for her “Sweater Quilt” (so called because she wore a certain sweater to thrift stores and matched all the colors to the sweater!!). We got to bask in Sally’s glory a little when she took us over and showed us the back of the quilt–almost as beautiful (the rules are strict–NO TOUCHING!!–and they have guards….but the maker CAN touch!)

After 5 1/2 hours of looking, scouring the vendors booths to add to our stashes, looking some more, we went back to LeeAnn’s for sustenance and Sally showed us several of her recently completed quilt tops:

Then we began the “UGLY FABRIC CHALLENGE.” LeeAnn dumped out two sacks of pretty hideous fabrics she was recently given. We chose teams and Colors. Sally and I took pink, orange, and purple:

You have to admit: this is a mess. Sally and I divided all the fabric in half and will each do something with them. Stay tuned. Cynthia and LeeAnn began making wonky squares with their choices and we laughed A LOT!!!

While all this activity was going on Bruce dashed in to say “two heads are better than one.”

  2. I am trying to verify Sally LeBoeuf’s ( my second cousin, or so) mailing address to send her family information. Would you be kind enuf to forward this to her? Thank you, Mardi (in Wichita, KS)

  3. Hi, I was trying to google Dorothy LeBoeuf (Sally) because I saw her quilts in Sujata Shah’s book Cultural Fusion and just loved her quilt Hawaiian Triangles. I was wondering if she had a blog or if not, could you pass onto her that her quilts really caught my eye and she might be my favorite quilter ever now that I’ve seen the cat quilt she made that you posted on your blog. I would love to see more of her creations!
