Camellias were my first Oregon revelation.  Yesterday the camellia in front of our lovely historic house reminded me of another little house…and that spring was on the way:

We came to Salem in 1970, and in January of 1971 moved into a rickety little wooden rental house over on Statesman Street.  The next month I looked out the window and saw an amazing camellia just like this one.  In the midwest–my region of origin–they were locked under snow and freezing temperatures in February, but here in Oregon everything was green and these huge flowers were all over the place.  (True love was born–this Oregon is an amazing place!!)

And that, of course, reminded me of the little house and the two adorable young persons who lived there lo these many years ago…

Off to the studio!

  1. Oh, my. Two gorgeous CHILDREN! I don’t remember Roger being that…that….hairy. Wasn’t that the nice dog I wanted to take back to San Francisco? I thought his name was Skipper? What I remember about that visit was that you had made a purse out of one of Zach’s out grown Osh-Koshes…

  2. I remember seeing my first camellias at my Aunt Linnea’s house in Tacoma in January when I was in high school. Quite a revelation to this Spokane girl who usually didn’t see any kind of flowers until early April!
