On our way down from Cannon Beach the other day we stopped in Tillamook to find these murals by Oregon muralist Lucia Wiley.  First in the post office

is this 1943 mural about Captain Gray’s 1788 landing on the Oregon coast.  Wiley was born in Tillamook in 1906…a third generation Tillamooker.  This post office mural is 7′ x 12′ and is egg-tempera on gesso-sized plaster.  This mural was a commission awarded through the section of Fine Arts, Treasury Department 48 States Competition.

Across the street in the courthouse is the 1950 mural “Building of the Morning Star” 13′ x 28′, and done in true fresco.  This fresco was painted by invitation from the community of Tillamook.  The Portland painter George Johanson was a student of Wiley’s at the Museum School of the Portland Art Museum, and spent the summer working as her assistant on this handsome mural.

All over Oregon, all over the US are these little gems.  Nice to think about…
