BEFORE I tell you about “artweek,” I thought I’d point out the seriously best ice cream I’ve had in ages, which you must go taste immediately at Salt & Straw, 2035 NE Alberta…
even though this picture isn’t very appetizingly good because I started eating BEFORE I took the picture…
Cheryl (my future co-mother-in-law) and I were at Bolt buying some fabric, and Salt & Straw is across the street. Then when I got there SURPRISE! Susannah Kelly works there and also her friend Neil…both artists (and both ice cream lovers). It was a hot and sunny afternoon…the heavens were aligned for ice cream…no kidding, go try it…
We had to go feed Bam the cat, do an errand and then headed to the “cart pod” at 43rd and Belmont for dinner. It was a warm night, we grabbed a small picnic table for perfect viewing of “pod culture”. I’d been wanting to try this out and it is really an inspired idea, especially on a warm evening. Sort of like a food court in a mall except the food is MUCH better and the atmosphere is funky and fun (instead of annoying and airless…) All ages, something for everybody…
Cheryl had a Greek hummus plate with falafel balls…
we both had this GREAT ginger tea with shredded ginger in it
I had a terrific quinoa veg wrap with peanut sauce from the MOST POPULAR cart, which meant I had to wait a long time
and when it came I was so hungry I forgot to take a photo…it was GOOD…and vegan (something I thought might be mutually exclusive…).
We then went to the big quilt show at the Expo center, and though there were nice things there for sure, AS USUAL, the ones that really caught my eye were the “antique” ones. The colors, the details, the pattern choice, the handwork…amazing…and several using a basic “fan:”pattern
and then this one from 1890…
with these delightful details which looked like drawings to me…
…and then the starfish quilt from just slightly later…
after hours of walking and loooking we were on overload so we took off…on the way home passing a house with a new take on metal siding…
I like how you are so excited about the food that you forget to take a photo-same way here. Such a lovely journey. Interesting starfish quilt. I had been reading about to make them earlier this year. All interesting.
Love the ice cream, the quilts, the food pod, need to get over there before it starts the rainy season, and last but not least the metal siding. I LOVE the metal siding.
Thanks Bonnie for sharing your adventures and insights of the day.
Exciting times for you all!
Ooh! Sorry I missed all this. Maybe next year.
What a fabulous weekend. How I wish that I could have been there. My daughter lives very near Bolt and I stopped in there when I visited her in August. Missed the ice cream, but maybe next time. Thanks for sharing the great quilt pictures. Wonderful colors, textures, and stitches.
