Oakland!

Last weekend we dashed to Oakland with Jennifer and George to see Fanny…their daughter and our niece. Fanny has lived in the east bay area for about 5 years but R and I haven’t been to visit..so we had a long sunny weekend of good fun, good food and lots of art. Fanny made all the arrangements including the wonderful Airbnb and making the flight reservations, so it was an easy and delightful trip…all we had to do was pay!!

Our back garden

Our “high street” was Piedmont where we found a good first-night dinner at Mistura

Mistura, Peruvian on Piedmont

Friday began with Beautys Bagels

Visiting the “there” sign …see Getrude Stein

heading to BAMPFA to see two shows I had been reading about…

“Stellar Garden”, Sara Kathryn Arledge, 1956
“Calligraphy, practice sheet” 1845, John Atwood Smith
“Duo”, Magritte
Coffee Break
Delia (Fanny’s roommate)

and on to Chez Panisse where they frown on photographs but not on drawing…I snuck this one though…

and then came Saturday…Oakland all day starting at the market, lunch with Patrick and Martin, coffee at Haddon Hill after watching the pelicans dive into Lake Merritt, prepping for dinner at Forest’s…

Spiderman trying to get some signatures on a petition

And then off to dinner at Forest’s pretty fantastic live/work space (studio dreams)

Homemade Cafe starts Sunday
Siblings who crack each other up
(I didn’t buy the bacon earrings…)

and then to the OMCA where there was an exhibit of things from “Burning Man”…things from their collection, and other good things on view…

“At the Restaurant”, 1945, Hassel W. Smith
Elmer Bischoff

…and then a whole section of one of my favorites Joan Brown…

a “temple” built for Burning Man

off to Rosenblum Cellars to meet up with Gilad and Lily and drink some wine, watch the smoky sunset,

Did these inspire Star Wars creatures??
we cooked in Sunday night…
and ate the leftovers for breakfast Monday before heading home…

Oakland plant life captivated me…bamboo and rosemary sheared into hedges, succulents everywhere, flowers in bloom all over…

One last trip to Piedmont Avenue to Owl Books and Snow White coffee before heading home…
Thanks Fan…brilliant.
