Here is a painting by Clifford Gleason (1913-1978), from 1977.  It is oil on canvas and is 6 feet high and 8 feet wide, called “Objects in Space”.

Gleason lived in Portland and Salem all of his life except for a stint in Paris in 1951 studying with Fernand Leger.  His high school teacher in Salem, Ruth Brouty Sitlinger, had studied with Hans Hofmann.  In Oregon he studied with Andrew Vincent and Louis Bunce.

This painting has been in various public collections since 1978, but has gone missing.  In the late 1970’s and early 1980’s it hung in the Salem Public Library, where I worked.  Seeing it daily I developed a real fondness for the painting.  The painting was damaged while at the library, transferred to Marion County Health Building, and then to the Salem Art Association.  The last time it was seen it was stored in the then residence (now offices) of the Bush House Museum…and then it disappeared.

If you’ve seen this painting in the last five years anywhere…let me know!!
