We left the Johansons’ and went over to Sellwood to see Cary Doucette’s show at 12X16 Gallery. These pieces are all cardboard and he thinks of them as templates, maquettes, for future wood or metal sculpture: this one is big–as tall as a mantle (which is what it makes me think of). The simplicity of […]

Lunch at the Johanson’s
After breakfast we jumped into the car and zoomed to Portland for lunch with George and Phyllis. Sitting at the kitchen table eating soup and talking about cave art, inaugurations, snow storms, etc. I had to remark anew on the “valentines” that line the window sill (all made by George): After our wonderful cabbage soup […]
Art Day Breakfast
Finally today was an all art day–a welcome change from my life of late. It began this morning with breakfast (“Word of Mouth”, 17th Street) with a bunch of artists: Sadie Booth watching Heidi P-G’s hand, Heidi P-G, Tere B, Eileen C-H, Corrie L-D, Kathleen D-R, and Paula P-B. Here’s what Sadie was looking at:
The Final Proofs
By that I mean the final FINAL printers’ proofs for the book/catalog/monograph (“Image, Myth, and Modernism”) Roger Hull has written about the work of Portland painter Harry Widman, in conjunction with the Harry Widman show Roger has curated, soon to open at the Hallie Ford Museum. The opening is Friday, January 30, 2009. The festivities […]
Self-Portraits
I’ve done a couple of self-portraits lately which has caused me to round up a few other examples, to see if I’ve made any progress. Self-portrait in art class, age 16. “Self Portrait in a Cracked Mirror,” London, 1980 Self portrait, 1989 Self portrait, 2008
The Glass Float Saga
My friend Kate got interested in glass floats about 2 years ago when she found a couple of them on the beach in Lincoln City. This year she got to make her own first float and it was a lot of fun to watch. Kate has great focus, and if ever that was needed it […]
The “Giveaways”
It was a lovely Christmas, especially the silent snow days when you couldn’t hear the traffic or any noise at all outside…except the pitter-patter of freezing rain…eek. But today, back to work. Roger is writing labels for the Harry Widman show, and I’m putting finishing touches on the “giveaways”–two art works due Jan 10 for […]
The Package
The other day I was really tired, kind of bummed out a little. The mail came late and included a package. It was so delightful looking–so sort of pretty. The way the tape was put on–the writing–the back. I began to open the package and discovered every thing about it was gorgeous–when the box flap […]
Harry Widman: The Proofs
Last week the proofs arrived for Roger’s book on Harry Widman to be published in 2009 in conjunction with the upcoming show at the Hallie Ford Museum. Since I’m never likely to write a book, I particularly enjoy living vicariously and sitting over dinner looking at the proofs. What fun.
