In our many visits to Italy we mostly have not had a view. This year we hit the jackpot:

News Bulletin:
I hate to derail my Italian train of thought, but just heard from Bru that Edith Macefield died in Seattle this weekend at age 86. Edith is the Ballard woman who just wanted to live out her life in her own little house and decided not to sell for $1,000,000,000 to Trader Joe’s. Hurrah Edith. […]
Graffiti
We saw much more graffiti this trip than ever before. My three favorites: Outside the wonderful Giardino dei Simplicei not far from the Duomo across the street from the new gelato favorite GROM (but my allegiance remains firm to Carrara).
Italia revisited
Laundry, jet lag, the usual homecoming. But a wonderful trip that reminded me of the paramount importance of living in the moment. So okay. From the beginning: Cortona. Hill town, ancient, about a 1 hour 45 minute drive to the south and east of Firenze, current population about 2000. During the course of our week […]
Arrivederla: We’re Off to Italy!
Tomorrow we take off for three weeks in Italy beginning in Cortona where Roger will be the guest lecturer for an alumni program. After a week in the beautiful hill town we go with friends to a “Villa” in the Umbrian countryside for a week, then on to Florence for 4 days. We come home […]
The Shortcut Home
We must never tell anybody how great it is to live here in Oregon. Tom McCall was right. So, okay. The traffic was bad, horrible. End of Memorial Day weekend. We took the short cut up _____ _________ road (well it’s a short cut, I can’t TELL you!!) We saw only one car in 30 […]
The Weekend so far
Friday we zoomed to Portland to have dinner with Zach and Lynn, check the new paint colors, and see Lynn’s amazing berry patches (four types of berries in the garden). Saturday we had coffee with Doug and Em and Fin and Zach (our second Staccato Gelato coffee in 18 hours!) Then we headed for the […]
Living the Creative Life: Cynthia Wilcox II
Yesterday I went out to Cynthia’s. It was “Groop” day, the day once a month that we get together to talk and think about quilting. It was cold and rainy up the Santiam yesterday–not at all like spring. Inside the studio though it was all color and warmth. The best thing about visiting the work […]
Field Notes: a Nature Walk
Having a botanist/biologist for a friend has always provided lively and interesting conversations (bird flu, flesh-eating viruses, pandemics, poison mushrooms) but this year we’re going into the field. The other day Sharon and I hiked the nature trail in Cutler City. Sharon said we would look especially for lichens and mosses, which we did, but […]
Living the Creative Life: D.E. May
Went up to the Regionnaires Club tonight to meet with Dan May, and Alisa Alexander. Alisa is a student at Willamette who is going to curate a show at the Hallie Ford in October–of Dan’s work. “Artist as Archivist.” As always, the space was amazing, the work on view was amazing. We’ve known Dan a […]
